Welcome to ELA! My name is Miss Curry, and I am so thrilled to be teaching 6-8 ELA here at Holy Angels. As a Diocese of Rockville Centre graduate myself, I find it so rewarding to be working here after four years teaching in the Diocese of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

Year-Long Themes
6th: Characters and Identity
7th: What It Means to Be a Hero
8th: Good vs. Evil
Current Explorations in Class
6th Grade: Historical Fiction: Yesterday and Today
Students are currently reading Number the Stars while working on their writing skills. We're looking at the way that novels on historical events are still relevant today by making text to text and text to world connections across historical documents and nonfiction articles. Students are continuing to explore literary analysis through the elements of Characterization, Symbolism, and Theme
7th Grade: Dystopias and Our Lives
We are getting into The Hunger Games while we discuss the ways our lives can mimic dystopian literature. We have recently started implementing classroom discussions based on the nonfiction pairings we are making with The Hunger Games. Students have been discussing the moral implications of reality television and the similarities our TV today has to the Games in the novel. 7th Graders are writing extensively and working to support their answers with textual evidence and to justify their arguments
8th Grade: Mysteries and Inferences
Murder on the Orient Express is the mystery for 8th Grade to uncover. We are looking closely at Agatha's Christie's craft and how setting and mood build the mystery of the text. Students are working on their inferencing skills while collecting textual clues to try and figure out the mystery before the characters do. We will be writing argumentative responses to literature, thinking critically, and honing our skills to support our arguments.
